Ditches
You are here : Home/Ditches
  • When the subdivision was initially laid out for drainage, the surveyors did in fact map out the "lay of the land" to determine the most logical direction the water would flow in the event of heavy rains. The laws of gravity will not change, but can be severely restricted when the actual water path is over-burdened through mismanagement and or no maintenance over time.
Proper Maintenance of Ditches as Water Runoff Points.
Ditches play a critical role in managing water runoff and preventing flooding to proper ditch maintenance.
Regular Inspection and Cleaning:

Remove debris, vegetation, and sediment that can block water flow.

Inspect after storms or heavy rainfall events.
Clear culverts and pipes connected to the ditch system.
Vegetation Management

Maintain some vegetation on ditch banks to prevent erosion.

Remove excessive growth that impedes water flow.
Consider hydro-seeding or planting erosion-resistant species.
Structural Maintenance

Repair eroded sections promptly.

Maintain proper ditch depth and profile (typically trapezoid-shaped).

Ensure consistent slope to promote water movement.
Seasonal Considerations

Clear fallen leaves in autumn.
Remove ice blockages in winter.
Perform major maintenance during dry periods.
Best Practices

Avoid disturbing the ditch during nesting seasons for local wildlife.

Use erosion control measures during maintenance activities.

Consider environmentally friendly approaches to vegetation management.
